A MAN who raided the residential quarters of a pub disturbed the landlord who was asleep and then fled though a window and down a drain pipe.

But the spiderman style escape was all captured on CCTV and burglar Scott Walsh was recognised by a police officer.

Walsh, 39, of Charles Street, Accrington, appeared for sentence at Preston Crown Court after admitting burglary at the New Inn, Thomas Street, Oswaldtwistle, on July 22. He was jailed for three years.

Ken Hind, prosecuting, said landlord David Howlett had installed 16 CCTV cameras inside and outside the pub. He had noticed Walsh as a customer earlier in the evening.

He locked up and went upstairs at 11.20pm when he was awoken by a noise and looked up and saw Walsh in the bedroom looking through drawers.

Walsh ran off but was trapped by a locked door. Mr Howlett gave chase and caught up with Walsh who turned to him.

Mr Hind said: "He told him he had a knife in his pocket and he would use it if he had to."

Walsh later escaped down the drainpipe and cash totalling £2,285 plus jewellery worth £940 was taken.

Sharon Watson, defending, said Walsh had a very serious addiction to heroin and had been threatened to repay a debt.

She said: "Feeling desperate to discharge this debt, he consumed alcohol and drugs and committed this burglary."
