A SILT-riddled paddling pool in a Darwen wood could be cleaned up for good if an application for funding comes through.

The paddling pool at Sunnyhurst Wood has been an ongoing issue with people in the area for several years.

Now, with hopes of securing a grant from the SITA Trust’s Enhancing Communities Programme, the beauty spot could be restored.

Sunnyhurst councillor Dave Smith said silt used to be cleared once a year and put to one side.

He said: “There were some complaints and it turned out it was illegal to do it that way.

“Silt actually has to be removed completely from the site, which would cost about £17,000.

“But there is no point just doing that as the silt comes back.”

Coun Smith explained that, if the bid for funds was successful, it could be used to prevent silt building up in future.

He said: “To stop the silt, you need to put in a silt trap further up the stream.

“There’s also a few trees that need trimming back.

“In total, all the work needed will cost about £30,000 to £35,000, and the council doesn’t have that to spend.

“But if we can get this grant, all the work will be done and the pool should be okay for the future.”

The Enhancing Communities Programme supports projects which make physical improvements to community leisure facilities and historic buildings or structures.

A decision should be made on whether the funds have been approved by Friday, March 30.

The grant application will be discussed at the next Friends of Sunnyhurst Wood meeting, on Tuesday at the Olde English Kiosk at 7.15pm. All are welcome.
