PEOPLE throughout the world are now able to keep in touch with the redevelopment of Nelson centre.

For the building of a new £5million development is being captured by webcam for global viewing on the world-wide web Pendle Council has installed the camera to chart construction of the Liberata office and leisure complex, Nelson, which will create 300 jobs.

The development is being built on the site of the former Grand Cinema, which was ravaged by fire in 2000 and is seen as a key to the future regeneration of the town. Brian Cookson, the council's executive director for regeneration, said: "These employees will vastly increase the number of people spending money in Nelson which will in turn encourage more retailers to locate here.

"It also means we can start to develop an evening economy again, with pubs and restaurants able to take advantage of extra spending power in the town."

The steel structure for the 49,000 sq ft building, being assembled by Nelson-based Barnfield Construction, is now taking shape.

It is expected to be completed next autumn and will house 500 employees from local government contractor Liberata as well as a one-stop shop where residents can access council information and services.

The complex, in Market Street, will be designed to blend in with buildings already in the area. It will also feature shops and a bistro.

Council leader Alan Davies said: "The redevelopment is a significant part of the council's plans to regenerate and revitalise Nelson town centre.

"The business centre is a new flagship for Nelson and one we are delighted to see taking shape."

Mark Taylforth, Development Director at Barnfield Construction added: "This development is a major project for Nelson and is hugely important in kick-starting the regeneration of the town."

The camera is based at Elliott House in Market Square.
