Retired RAF officer John Douglas Southall died as a result of bronchopneumonia after being admitted to hospital following a fall.
But an inquest heard the pneumonia was as a result of a pre-existing chronic obstructive airways disease and not connected to the fractured hip he suffered in the fall.
Mr Southall, 86, of Wellfield Nursing Home, Whalley Road, Accrington, had several falls in the weeks before he died.
Deputy coroner Carolyn Singleton recorded a verdict of natural causes.
