ANOTHER Pendle primary school is set for expansion to try to create enough school places for youngsters in the borough.

Education bosses at Lancashire County Council are proposing to expand Reedley Primary School as the birth rate in Nelson and Brierfield continues to rise.

A planned permanent expansion at Holy Trinity Primary School, in Halifax Road, Brierfield, has been shelved after the governors decided not to go ahead with the plans.

Lynn MacDonald, Lancashire County Council's schools planning and development manager, said: “Recent increases in the number of births in Brierfield and Nelson means that, as local children reach statutory school age, there may not be sufficient places in these areas to meet the demand for September 2012 and beyond.”

The new proposal will see a temporary increase in admission at Reedley Primary School, in Reedley Road, for September 2012.

A formal consultation will also look at permanently expanding the school by September 2013 through new accommodation on the school site.

The most controversial move to increase numbers will see a formal consultation begin on moving St Paul’s Primary School, in Hibson Road, Nelson to the former Mansfield High School site in Elland Road.

That would see capacity double to around 420, but it has angered parents and councillors, who are concerned at moving the church school to a new site one mile away.

Ms MacDonald said only one of the potential sites was deemed suitable to deliver the new school in the time required.
