ARMY bomb disposal experts were called in after the discovery of explosives at a house in Barnoldswick.

A 100-metre area surrounding the house in Rankin Close was sealed off from 10.50am on Wednesday while the devices were recovered.

The cordon was lifted at 7pm when the last of the devices was taken away for forensic examination.

Detectives were today probing whether the find was linked to a bomb scare last week at West Craven High Technology College. The discovery in Rankin Close was made after officers were called to the house following reports of a disturbance.

Police arrested a man on suspicion of harassment and said they later found explosive materials during searches.

A man from Barnoldswick was questioned by detectives and later released on bail pending further inquiries. Police would not say what the devices found in the house were, but said the incident was not linked to terrorism.

However, officers were probing whether the incident was linked to last Thursday's scare when a suspicious package was found in the grounds of the college.

Detective Constable Ian McLean said the results of the forensic tests would not be known for a few days.

He said: "For the safety of the public a 100-metre cordon which was a preventative measure was put in place.

"The investigation is ongoing as to what possible offences could have taken place.

"At this stage there is nothing to connect the incidents but we are looking in to them because they are both unusual.

"The public should not be unduly worried but we would ask the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious devices."
