A safety initiative has been launched that will see £250,000 invested in CCTV cameras in Hyndburn.

The scheme will add to the 29 cameras that are already positioned across the borough, including the 19 in Accrington centre.

And Hyndburn Council is asking residents to identify "hotspots" that would benefit from the crime deterrents.

Council leader Peter Britcliffe said: "This is an important development, as people have been telling us they want to feel safer on our streets.

"We are determined to make that happen and these extra cameras, to be located right across the borough, will certainly play a huge part in that."

He said the idea was to locate the new cameras in community areas away from town centres.

The council will have £100,000 to spend on the cameras this financial year and £150,000 next year.

The cameras can cost around £25,000 each depending on their technical abilities.

The cash for the project was allocated in the council's budget in May when Coun Britcliffe said safety schemes had been identified as a priority after consultations with residents' groups.

He added: "People want to see more money spent on things like CCTV systems to improve safety.

"This means extending the use of CCTV cameras and developing a control centre to make people feel safer on our streets."

Coun John Griffiths, the chairman of the Baxenden Area Council, said: "I would certainly welcome any extra cameras in Baxenden.

"CCTV helps to keep an eye on things and can provide piece of mind for residents.

"It is important that they are not just in the main town centre areas."
