A 14-YEAR-OLD boy’s IQ has placed him in the top one per cent of the country after excelling at a Mensa test.

And as a result of his score, Corey Bolton, of Blackburn, has become a fully-fledged member of Mensa.

Corey, a pupil of Rhyddyings Business and Enterprise School in Oswaldtwislte, gained a score of 150 in the problem-solving tests.

That places him in the top one per cent in the country.

In the second part of the test, the cultural test, he scored 139 placing him in in the top two per cent.

Corey, of Whinny Heights, Blackburn, was encouraged to take the test at a sitting in Blackburn College when his form tutor, and maths teacher Clare Jackson, spotted his natural academic ability through assessments.

Former Belthorn Primary School pupil Corey, who is unsure of what career he wishes to pursue, said: “I was surprised when I was given the results because I didn’t think I had done that well.

“I was very happy and quite surprised that I had got into Mensa.

"My friends are pleased for me but they call me Mensa boy now.”

Corey’s mum, Amanda Bolton, said: “Corey has got a very good memory.

"He remembers anything that he has seen and is always reading the newspapers.

“He is very much into statistics. When he was younger he used to study the atlas and knows the names of mountains and volcanoes.

“He’s always been an avid reader. When he was at school I had to be careful about which library books to choose because I didn’t want him to know the topic before he went to class.

“As far as I’m aware there’s nobody we know in the family who is like Corey.

“We are very proud of him.”

Maths teacher Mrs Jackson said: “We were absolutely delighted.

“I took him down to the test to let him give it a try but I was gobsmacked when he passed.”
