A pensioner suggested there is no point in saving if you are then penalised by means tests and have to pay nursing home bills if you have more than £23,000 (LT, July 22).

I’ve told my parents to enjoy blowing every last penny of our inheritance and as soon as possible.

Saving for a rainy day or putting something aside for your children is all well and good, but make sure the state can’t get their hands on it or pocket a shed load of inheritance tax etc.

Put it into an account under their name, or better still, spend the lot and have a blast.

Name supplied, Whalley.
