SAND yachts are set to return to a Lancashire beach where a Burnley mum was killed nine years ago.
The sport has been banned since Carole Cruz, 38, was struck by a racing sand yacht as she walked on St Anne’s beach in 2002.
The teaching assistant at the former St Hilda’s RC High School had been walking with her sons Steffan, then 12, and 14-year-old Jason.
Now racing yachts will be making a trial return until September after Fylde Council reached an agreement with Fylde International Sand Yacht Club and Natural England.
Several conditions have been required by the local authority before the licence is officially granted.
A Fylde Council spokesman said: “Safety will be paramount and we would not consider having this back unless we thought we could guarantee the safety of members of the public, and we will be monitoring this aspect very closely.”
Adrian Warren, from Doncaster, a sand-yachting enthusiast, was cleared of the manslaughter of Mrs Cruz following a Preston Crown Court trial in 2004.
