CUSTOMERS could be getting faster food at the McDonald's drive-thru in Burnley.

Plans to install a second lane at the 24-hour Trafalgar Street restaurant are set to be discussed by councillors at a development control committee meeting on Thursday.

Restaurant bosses said the additional lane would streamline the ordering process and reduce any congestion in the car park, which causes delays and an increase in noise levels.

A resident living near to the fast food outlet has objected, but plans look set to be given the green light.

Fast food wars look set to break out in the area later this year when a new KFC restaurant, near the former Car Village, opens its doors.

A spokesman for McDonald’s said: “The new side by side drive-thru lanes will streamline and formalise the ordering process during peak trading times, reducing the length of the potential queue and congestion within the site during those busy periods.

“During quieter periods, customers can use either order point.”

The creation of the new lane would mean five parking spaces being taken away at an already small car park.

A report to the development control committee states: “The creation of an additional lane involves a minor alteration to the car park, which is probably a good thing in terms of the free flowing traffic within the car park and also would not cause any congestion on Burnham Gate.

“McDonald's main aim is to provide a speedier and more efficient service and keep disturbance levels to a minimum.

“It must be noted, that some level of noise is expected considering the location and the nature of the business.

“The noise levels mainly occur during peak hours and other times it’s fairly balanced.”

The objection came from a resident on Bevington Close who said it would increase the noise level.
