A SERIES of new walks have been devised to take in the historic hinterland between East Lancashire and Yorkshire.

And each of the treks is just a short hop away from a bus stop, as part of the initiative launched by public transport operator Transdev.

The services of top countryside writer Colin Speakman and his son Dorian have been enlisted to capture the essence of places including Foulridge, Thornton-in-Craven and Sabden.

Mr Speakman said: “Bus services pass through some of the most beautiful areas in East Lancashire.

“The Mainline and Lancashire United routes pass through an astonishing contrast in scenery, from the busy towns, through rich pasture and parkland, to heather moors and high summits.

“In just a few minutes you are in the real countryside, magnificent walking country which is yours to explore for a full day or just an afternoon.”

Brief guides to the various towns and villages along the routes have also been included in a new booklet to accompany the scheme.

Nigel Eggleton, the bus firm’s marketing director, added: “We think this is an excellent way to enjoy our buses.

“Not only can you relax, but because seating is higher up than in a car, you enjoy far better, uninterrupted views across walls and hedges.

“And there’s a much lower carbon footprint so it’s better for the environment.”

The walks range from a waterway hike, from Foulridge Reservoir to Barnoldswick, to the Ribble Way from Gisburn to Sawley Abbey.

Others cover the Pennine Way from Thornton-in-Craven to Earby, Sabden to Padiham and Wycoller Country Park’s links with Laneshawbridge and Trawden.
