No further action will be taken against a woman who falsely reported that a baby had been left in a bag by the side of a countryside road in Rossendale.
A major search was launched when the woman rang emergency services to say the newborn child was dumped on the outskirts of Edenfield on the evening of May 10.
Police found a bag containing a blood-stained blanket at the reported scene in Rochdale Road but no trace of a baby or its mother.
A 28-year-old woman from Bury, Greater Manchester, was arrested on suspicion of concealing a birth and later bailed.
It is understood she was not willing to undergo medical examinations to show she had given birth but detectives concluded she had not had a child following inquiries.
A Lancashire Police spokeswoman: "A 28-year-woman arrested in connection with this incident has been released without charge."
