FUNDING to run the new £8million Blackburn Youth Zone has now been confirmed, despite public spending cutbacks.

And a recruitment drive is now set to be launched to staff the project.

There had been fears that Blackburn with Darwen Council may have to withdraw its promised £400,000 annual support as it attempted to make cuts.

But with work now underway at the former site Jubilee House site chief executive Peter Little, 48, said progress was going well.

He is now looking for 'inspirational' staff, including youth workers and fundraisers as well as sports and arts workers.

Mr Little said: "This scheme is all about changing the lives of the young people of the borough.

"We need people to inspire and encourage and to be part of an amazing project for the town."

A total of 17 new jobs are to be created and many more voluntary positions will be created.

Work started earlier this year at the former Jubilee House site, in Blackburn town centre, and it is expected to open before the end of the year.

The Blackburn Youth Zone is predicted to change thousands of young lives for years to come.

It will see an anticipated 3,000 youngsters attending every week, and is modelled on the legendary Bolton Lads and Girls Club.

Funding for the £8million build-ing project has been secured, but it will cost £1million per year to run.

The Youth Zone board is now in the process of securing backing from 20 founder patrons, who will help meet the operating costs.
