A PROTEST against the Government’s drive to take more people off disability benefits took place in Burnley town centre yesterday.

Several people affected by the latest austerity measures voiced their opposition next to the bandstand in St James Street.

The demonstration was led by Disabled People Against Cuts and supported by the North East Lancs Right To Work campaign.

Former mechanical engineer Steven Anderson, 53, from Leyland Road, Bank Hall, said: “They have cut me down to the bare bones and now they want me to find a job.”

He said his mobility and memory loss problems disqualify him from most positions and he was now struggling to pay electricity and gas bills.

His daughter and carer Amanda Anderson, 29, who has shoulder and knee problems of her own, also fears she may be taken off incapacity benefit in June.

Amanda said: “I do a lot for my dad – I am basically his memory as he will go out and leave the front door open or forget to switch things off.”

The protest follows a similar demonstration outside the town hall earlier this year.
