A ‘TAKEAWAY’ tax levied weekly on fast food outlets has been suggested as a way of cleaning up Darwen.
Mark Westall, chairman of the St Peter’s Resident’s Association, ran the idea past Darwen town councillors at a meeting this week, after becoming concerned about the amount of litter in the area.
He said: “A lot of the litter is from people using takeaways. If we got each business to pay £10 a week, that would pay for someones wages to go around and clear up.”
Sudell councillor Roy Davies said it was a “cracking idea”, but Mayro Paul Browne said: “We just don’t have the power, as a town council, to do anything like this.”
