LIFE-size dragon lanterns could be paraded through the streets of Clitheroe.

Plans are being put in place to resurrect one of the town’s most famous traditions – its Torchlight Procession and Fireworks Display.

The last Clitheroe Torchlight was held in 2002 in honour of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.

Now a working group has been set up to stage a procession through the streets on September 8, 2012, commemorating the Queen’s Diam-ond Jubilee and the London Olympic Games.

Peter Moore, chairman of the Torchlight Working Group, said: “It is always a very successful event and we would like representatives from every village and community to take part to make this another fantastic opportunity to bring tourists into the area.”

Preliminary arrangements are being made by Clitheroe Town Council in consultation with Ribble Valley Council and other local organisations.

Mr Moore added: “The 2012 event will be similar to those organised in the past, taking into account health and safety regulations.

"It will rely on the generosity of the local community and every effort will be made to make it self-financing.”

Local bands to play along with morris dancing groups are currently being recruited to perform on the Clitheroe Castle field throughout the day.

“I am optimistic that, with the help and support of the comm-unity, the 2012 Torchlight will be the best yet,” said Mr Moore.

“Although arrangements are in the very early stages, organisations wishing to take part in the procession are welcome to register their interest by getting in touch with us.”.

The group holds its next meeting in the town hall, Church Street, Clitheroe, on Wednesday at 7.30pm.
