DARWEN Library will close every Tuesday and Thursday morning to save money.

The move, to be brought in shortly, has been sanctioned by Blackburn with Darwen Council as it looks to make £33million cuts to the budget over four years.

The closures will be at times the library is most quiet.

Harold Heys, acting chairman of the Friends of Darwen Library, said: “We have to be realistic.

It makes sense to close on Tuesdays.

Thursday morning closure is a bit of a surprise, but it could release a few quid to boost the book fund which is going to be badly hit.”

A council spokesperson said: “We held a very well attended public consultation meeting at Darwen Library and there was a clear sense that library users considered closure on Tuesdays, when the library is very quiet, and a reduction in the service on Thursdays, would be reasonable if they helped the council put money back into the book fund.”

FODL next meets at 6pm on April 11.
