CATHEDRAL bosses are close to admitting defeat in their bid to house 10 scholars in a new tower block in Blackburn town centre.

Talks have taken place to see whether the 18 to 22-year-old choral scholars could live in the Cathedral Court complex, built by Blackburn businesswoman Margo Grimshaw.

The cathedral hoped to rent some of the flats in the block, in Mincing Lane, the most advanced part of the part-built project.

But Canon Andrew Hindley said: “At the moment they are too expensive, and sadly we are unable to go forward with it. But it’s not a definite ‘no’.”

The 10 scholars, who will spend the year singing with the choir between school and university when they arrive in September, have been part-funded by a donation from former Blackburn Rovers bidder Ahsan Ali Syed.

Work is set to begin in the coming weeks to complete the Cathedral Court development, now owned by Manchester-based Dwell Developments.
