THE RAF’S entire fleet of Tornados could be retired early, according to reports.
The decision, which may be forced by a Ministry of Defence (MoD) spending crisis, would affect workers at BAE Systems in Warton, on the Fylde coast, who service the aircraft.
The MoD is considering grounding all Tornados within the next three years to find savings, the Guardian said.
By 2020, defence chiefs want the RAF’s backbone to be Eurofighter Typhoon and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft, both of which are partly manufactured at BAE’s Samlesbury plant.
