HARDMAN'S Mill in Rawtenstall will be used for all future meetings of Rossendale Council despite strong opposition.

Councillors approved the plans to take over the lease for the Mill Suite at Hardman's Mill and to appoint three Conservative and two Labour councillors to monitor the proposals.

The decision was "called in" by three councillors, Leonard Entwistle, Graham Haworth and Amanda Robertson, but it was upheld at a meeting of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

Coun Entwistle, who stood down from The Tory party over the decision, suggested a number of alternatives including Kay Street and the Magistrates Court, but he was overuled.

He said: "To me it's just the wrong place. It's too far out of the way."

Council leader Duncan Ruddick said a survey of members had found many were unhappy with the temporary venues chosen in recent times, including Bacup Leisure Hall. He said Hardman's Mill only required minor adjustments including a ramp for disabled access.
