COMMUNITY chiefs are launching a 100-day blitz on anti-social behaviour, fly-tipping and littering in Hyndburn.

The clean-up campaign will start with the painting of a community mural to inspire residents to keep their area in tip-top condition.

The campaign is a co-ordinated effort between police, Hyndburn Council and other agencies, and will concentrate on the Central, Springhill and Oswaldtwistle wards.

The mural project is designed to keep youngsters occupied during the summer holidays and reduce anti-social behaviour in the area.

Painting will start on Tuesday, with local school children joining resident artist Janice McGloine to create a 30ft by 20ft masterpiece.

The mural will take three weeks to complete and will then be on display at Oswaldtwistle Mills.

The Co-op has donated food and drink for the painters, while equipment has been provided by Homebase, Glyn Webb and Refurb.

Other plans for the 100-day clean-up include targeting fly-tipping and littering. Police will be carrying out high visibility patrols in Springhill, while Trading Standards and the DVLA will also be working in the area.

Sgt Claire Cooper, of Accrington Police, said: "This is great chance for everyone to work together to tackle issues of environmental concern and make a real difference in your neighbourhoods. Over the next 100 days we have the opportunity to make a dramatic difference to the lives of residents. I would encourage local residents and businesses to get involved in making the area a cleaner, safer place."
