DOG owners in Burnley have been told to clean up after their pets or risk going to jail.

The warning comes after 24 fixed penalty notices were issued in recent months, while five dog owners face possible court action for not cleaning up after their animals.

Areas where fine notices have been issued include parks and public fields, as well as streets and pavements throughout the town.

Burnley Council has launched a tough clampdown on dog fouling with the introduction of more on the spot fines for owners and the likelihood of court prosecutions for some offenders.

Dog wardens have stepped up patrols across the borough and are particularly targeting open areas such as parks and local beauty spots.

Anyone receiving a fixed penalty notice will have to pay a £50 fine within 14 days of issue, or risk further prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.

Joyce Walkden, Burnley Council's principal environmental health officer, said the local authority would not tolerate dirty dogs and owners would be punished.

She said: "We want to send a clear message to dog owners that turning a blind eye while their dogs foul local parks, green spaces and streets will not be tolerated.

"Those who choose to flout the law will be hit where it hurts, in their pockets and in some cases this could mean prosecution and substantial fines. It could also leave the owner with a criminal record.

"We would advise any one taking their dog out to act responsibly and ensure they do clean up after them. It makes better sense for both the environment and the local community."
