A NELSON father-of-two headbutted his wife and threatened her with a rolling pin after she wanted to carry on a day-long drinking session, Burnley magistrates heard.

Neil Wood, 35, later told police he had had about 17 pints, but was not drunk, knew exactly what had gone on, and did not remember attacking her.

Wood, of Walverden Terrace, admitted assault. He was bailed until August 17 for a pre-sentence report, and justices said they were thinking of a community sentence.

Elizabeth Read, prosecuting, said the victim and defendant had been having marital problems and he accused her of having an affair.

They had been out for the day and at about 11.30pm she wanted to stay in the garden socialising, but Wood wanted to go in.

He became angry and attacked her, smashed the phone when she tried to call police, and held a rolling pin to her head.

Mrs Read said the victim was left very shocked, her head was banging', her nose was sore, and her lip cut.

Brian Irlam, defending, said in many ways Wood had been a model husband, working and supporting his family.

He wanted to break the party up and his wife to go to bed, and became agitated when she wouldn't.
