COMPUTER equipment no longer wanted by Lancashire businesses is set to be made available for use within the community.
The Defra Business Re-use Fund (BRF) and Lancashire Voluntary Community and Faith Sector have struck up a partnership.
A joint scheme called 2nd-bite will help people gain access to used computers.
The plan will also help businesses dispose of unwanted equipment legally.
A spokesperson for the project said: "Under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005, some IT equipment has now been reclassified as hazardous waste, with the result that businesses will pay higher disposal costs.
"If a business has computers to dispose of with a minimum specification of Pentium II, they can donate them to 2nd-bite for re-use in the local community.
"The environment also benefits as IT equipment is being re-used instead of going straight to landfill sites."
