VOLUNTEERS from Pendleside Hospice have received a royal reception at Buckingham Palace after the group was given the prestigious Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

The hospice is one of only 104 organisations across the country to win the award this year.

The award gives recognition to the unsung heroes in communities. And hospice volunteers John and Ann Branch (above), attended the reception on behalf of the hospice.

Hospice chairman David Brown said: "This is a fantastic achievement and is a reflection of the huge amount of work put in by our volunteers to support and complement our paid staff. We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this prestigious honour."

Before the hospice, in Reedley, was set up, terminally-ill cancer patients had to travel to Ilkley, Rochdale or Bolton to receive specialist palliative care.
