A FAMILY have spoken of their anguish after their pet terrier Lucky was mauled to death by another dog.

The beloved 11-year-old pooch was attacked on the doorstep of the family home in Blackburn after a walk late last week.

But after surgery Lucky was put to sleep by vets on Sunday night.

Julie Entwistle, 46, of Franklin Road, Witton, said the family had been left devastated by the attack.

And she called for more to be done to stop 'irresponsible dog owners', who pose a risk to other pets.

The mum-of-one said: “Lucky was my little girl.

“Lucky was tiny and didn’t stand a chance. We are all distraught.”

Ms Entwistle, who lives with partner Richard Looms and daughter Jessica Looms, 17, said their Jack Russell/ cairn terrier cross was attacked from behind by a greyhound.

Lucky needed to have her rear left leg amputated and suffered internal injuries to her organs after the incident at 10pm on Wednesday.

She said: “That dog tore her to pieces and left her back leg hanging off.

“We took her to the vet’s and they thought that she could fight through. We took her home on Saturday but her condition deteriorated and she was put to sleep on Sunday.

“It is sickening that something like this can take place."

Ms Entwistle, who works as catering manager at St Silas Primary School, reported the incident to police.

Officers said the incident was being investigated.
