YORKSHIRE puddings, roast beef, spuds, and gravy were top of the menu as schools attempted a world record- breaker.

Thousands of schoolchildren across East Lancashire were treated to a hearty roast dinner as part of a national bid to eat the most roast dinners simultaneously.

Catering staff put the usual school menu to one side and cooked up a storm to feed every pupil a full roast as part of Roast Dinner Day yesterday.

The initiative aims to improve school meals by making them healthier.

Lancashire County Council bosses were yesterday calculating how many children ate roast dinners.

And they should find out today whether they have taken the title and broken the Guinness World Record, which currently stands at 1,362 people.

Jill Wilshaw, key stage two teacher at Brunshaw Primary School, Burnley, said: “The kids really enjoyed it.

They don’t usually have a roast dinner and it was nice for them to be part of the record-breaking attempt.”

Whalley CE Primary School’s school cook Maureen Steer said: “There was a big uptake and the children thoroughly enjoyed it.

“There was little food waste as well, which was great.”
