BOSSES have urged people to watch how much water they use in a bid to avoid an all-out hosepipe ban this summer.
United Utilities, which is responsible for the water supplies across East Lancashire, said reserves at its reservoirs were ‘below average’ following a dry start to 2010.
It has issued guidance to customers to ensure emergency measures do not need to be put in place later in the year.
John Sanders, from United Utilities, said: “It has been the third driest start to the year in more than 70 years.
“If this dry weather continues United Utilities has strategies in place to maintain essential supplies to customers.
“We are following our normal plans for dry weather conditions, which include making use of our highly integrated supply network to balance supply and demand across the region.”
Among the reservoirs currently running low on water are two in Guide in Blackburn, and ones in Barley, Pendle, and in Grane Road, near Haslingden.
Mr Sanders urged customers to use water wisely, suggesting turning off the cold tap when brushing teeth and only using dishwashers and washing machines for full loads.
He added: “Let's all enjoy the coming summer, but let's also think about how we use our water.”
Environment Agency water manager Clive Gaskell said: “We are working closely with United Utilities to protect the region’s water supplies in both the short and long term while protecting the environment and wildlife. We all need to use less water.”
