A BLACKBURN student has danced her way into ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney's prestigious performing arts institute.

Claire Bamber, 17, was delighted to receive an unconditional offer from the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, known as the Fame Academy', to complete a one-year diploma course in September.

The Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School sixth form student, of The Croft, Hoghton, performed in four separate disciplines to win her place.

She performed ballet, freestyle, contemporary and mechanics at her auditions in March. Her diploma will major in dance.

She said: "I've been told there are several thousand applicants for just over 20 places on the dance course so I was really thrilled to receive the offer letter."

Angela, Claire's mother and sports coach, said: "It is her passion. I initially thought she was going to be interested in sports but dancing took over.

"She got better and better and has become stronger and stronger.

"I am really proud of her. Claire's determination will take her anywhere."

Claire, who has been dancing from the age of four, has completed her A-level exams and several dance exams, including advanced ballet and intermediate tap The teenager, who has danced at Her Majesty's theatre in London, also teaches baby ballet and is a sports coach voluntarily.

She said: "I would like to dance on stage in the West End, Mama Mia is really appealing at the moment and perhaps on a cruise liner once I have my qualifications."

Claire has to pay her course fees, in the region of £8,000 including expenses, in advance.
