A MOTORIST involved in a speeding ticket scam kept his freedom and was given a community order like 12 co-defendants.

Mohammed Malik, 35, told police he had heard about a place "that made the file disappear." Burnley Crown Court heard.

He said he had gone to a premises in Nelson and spoke to a man who said if he handed over £100, he could get rid of the points.

Malik, of Shackleton Street, Burnley, admitted attempting to pervert the course of justice. He was given a 12 month community order with 60 hours unpaid work and must pay £250 costs. He had no previous convictions.

The court has heard how drivers who got a notice of intended prosecution over speeding allegations used a "fixer" to try and get out of being fined and getting points.

The fixer would return the forms to police using fictitious names, but real addresses in the Nelson area.

The defendant had been caught out doing 40mph in a 30mph zone, in October 2007.
