A DRUG addict who broke into several cars in one night has been jailed.

Burnley Magistrates Court heard how Mark Morton, 29, of Rutland Street, Nelson, had been given a suspended jail term just two days before the spree in Nelson.

He helped himself to executive golf clubs among a £780 haul from one car because he had no cash and had not eaten for two days, the court was told.

Morton, said to carry all his worldly goods in a bin liner, was caught out when he went into a second hand shop in the town and police recognised him on the shop's CCTV.

He admitted theft and asked for three offences two of theft and one of attempted theft to be considered.

The defendant was jailed for 274 days.

Sentencing, District Judge Peter Ward told Morton he had had chances. He added: "It may well be that you have drug problem and you had no money.

"That doesn't alter the fact you broke into people's vehicles and stole property of significant value.

"Hopefully, whilst in custody, you might be able to do something about your drug problem."

Glen Smith, defending, said Morton had not eaten for two days and committed the offences because he was at a loss what to do.

Mr Smith said Morton's situation was one of despair. He added: "All he has in the world is in a bin liner."
