Ambulance crews who were called to attend an overturned car im Fence were left baffled when no driver could be found.
Witnesses to the accident, which happened at 10.50pm yesterday in Wheatley Lane Road, said they saw someone walking away from the scene.
An ambulance spokesman said: "After a thorough search of the location the crews from Nelson were satisfied that the driver had absconded.
"Police were informed."
