A CHARITY football match is to be held in memory of a Blackburn football fan who died in a motorway crash.

Carl Vause, 19, of Amber Avenue, Roe Lee, died on Saturday, May 6, after an accident on the M6 in Staffordshire.

At his funeral earlier this month, mourners wore Blackburn Rovers shirts with his nickname Vausey on the back, and he was carried in a specially designed coffin bearing the team's crest.

Carl was also a keen Blackburn Sunday League football player, with the Stanley Arms team, and now his team-mates are to hold an event in his memory tomorrow.

The Stanley Arms team, based at the pub in Pemberton Street, will play local side Prince of Wales, based at the pub on Montague Street.

The landlords of the two pubs are acquaintances, and helped to organise the match, which was the idea of the players themselves, who wanted to pay tribute to their popular team-mate.

Spectators are welcome to attend, and a cost of £1 will go towards helping the team, which plans on creating a lasting tribute to Carl.

Diane Duncan, secretary of the Stanley Arms football team, has urged locals to attend the match, and boost the charity funds.

She said: "All the lads said, Couldn't we have some sort of a match?' The landlord at the Stanley Arms goes into the Prince of Wales a lot, and knew they had a good team. Everybody together said, Let's do this.' The match will take place at Griffin Park from 2pm. Entry is £1. After the match an annual trophy presentation event is due to take place back at the Stanley Arms pub, which will be extended to feature a charity raffle and auction.
