A FLAGSHIP business organisation set up to represent Asian traders in the county is moving out of East Lancashire.

The Asian Business Federation (ABF), based in Blakewater Road, Whitebirk, Blackburn, was launched in February 2001 from a small office but now represents 1,200 members.

Over the last four years the federation has held annual dinner events at King George's Hall, but recently it was announced this year's fifth anniversary bash' would be held in Preston because the Blackburn venue was not large enough.

Now the federation is to move completely to the city, as part of an expansion programme. But today the head of the organisation promised its heart would always be in Blackburn.

Khalid Saiffullah, CEO of the ABF, said: "Blackburn always has and always will be the heart of the federation, with over 50 per cent of our clients being based here.

"The move is part of our long-term strategy to ensure that all businesses across Lancashire have access to the vital help and support that our expert team offers.

"Irrespective of the size of the business or the culture of the owners, our aim is to provide the crucial guidance and skills needed to ensure that businesses throughout Lancashire are given the chance to flourish."

At past Asian Business Federation annual events, speakers have included Time Computers founder Tahir Mohsan. This year, a 600-strong audience, including Jack Straw, is planned to take part in the networking event. The ABF says the new plans are part of a bid to strengthen links between Preston and Blackburn, and increase business opportunities.

Councillor Andy Kay, executive member for regeneration on Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: "We are glad that an organisation is growing and that it is developing in a regional promotion way but we are a bit disappointed they didn't consult with the council first."
