A PUB in Knuzden Brook has been refused permission to extend its opening hours.

Residents living near the Knuzden Brook Hotel had written to Hyndburn Council objecting to the pub's plans to stay open until midnight during the week and 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.

They feared it would increase nuisance, crime and noise in what is a residential area.

Pensioner Elsie Whittaker lives near the pub and is one of the residents who urged the council not to allow it to stay open longer. She said: "I live three doors away and when I go to bed I can still hear music.

"Then there are taxis and cars coming and going, and people shouting.

"So it is with some concern that I see what is proposed."

Charles Blower, of Cornwall Avenue, which is behind the pub's garden, added: "We have already been affected by noise from loud music, karaoke and bands.

"We are also being disturbed by cars revving up, doors slamming and noise from people shouting and talking, and urinating in the roadway."

The council's licensing sub-committee voted to refuse the pub's application for an extended opening hours.

Speaking after the meeting chairman, Coun Ann Scaife said: "Our refusal was to do with the well-being and quality of life of residents in the area.

"It is a very residential area and is a terrace building with a wall adjoining a residential property."
