A BLACKBURN College student has died when his scooter collided with a Toyota pick-up.

Today, staff at the college paid tribute to Jonathan Hart, describing him as a student "with a great future in front of him."

A 17-year-old died when his 50cc Aprilla collided with the Toyota on his way to work around 7.40am yesterday.

Paramedics were called but Jonathan, who rode the scooter to DTJ Electrical, Leyland, every day, died at the scene, in Church Road, Leyland.

He was studying as an apprentice electrician at Blackburn College.

His parents and boss were due at the college today to receive a glowing update report on his academic progress.

His parents, John and Angela Hart, from Chorley, said: "We are still coming to terms with Jonathan's sad death.

"His friends will remember him as a very keen moto-cross rider and competitor."

"He will be sadly missed by us, by his sister and by other family members.

"His death is a very tragic loss. He had so much to live for."

Ann Pilkington, assistant vice-principal at Blackburn College, said: "The college is deeply saddened by news of Jonathan's tragic death and all our sympathy goes to his parents, family and friends.

"Jonathan was a popular student with both staff and other students and was doing exceptionally well in his job and his studies.

"It is a huge loss for us all."

Jonathan's boss Derek Jukes, group chairman of DTJ Electrical, said he started with the company last August and was an extremely hard worker.

"As far as I could see he had a great future and was doing well. He was well liked by everybody at the company," he said.

"We are totally dismayed and feel for his parents who are friends of ours."

Mr Jukes said he was due to go to the college with Jonathan's parents today for a progress report on his apprenticeship.

He said the company would close on the day of the funeral, which was yet to be set, as a mark of respect to the family.

The crash caused major traffic delays across Leyland as Church Road was closed until 11.30am while accident investigators examined the scene.

It happened close to Balshaws CE High School and drivers were urged to avoid the area.

A spokesman for Lancashire Ambulance, said: "Paramedics' attempts to resuscitate the rider but he died at the scene."

A man is being questioned by police following the crash.

Witnesses to the incident are asked to call Sgt Alan Baron on 01257 246281.
