A MAN who broke into two vehicles on his way home from a drinking session caused £300 worth of damage.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Christopher Jones, 21, was seen attacking the cars by a man looking out of his bedroom window who phoned for the police.

Jones, of Denville Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to two charges of vehicle interference and one of theft. He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £300 compensation and £50 costs.

Claire Fanning, prosecuting, said a car and a van parked in Sumner Street had their doors bent back and damage done to the steering locks and wiring. When interviewed Jones denied trying to start the vehicles but accepted looking for something to steal.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said Jones was in company with another man who was well known to the courts.

"He was aware of the legal system and having admitted nothing has walked away scot-free," said Mr Taylor. "My client admitted what had happened and he appears today."

He said Jones was employed as a welder and was anxious to pay for the damage he had caused.
