STEVE Cotterill is urging Gifton Noel Williams to go with the Flo' and end a frustrating season on a wave of euphoria.

Noel-Williams, a victim of Ade Akinbiyi's success in the successful lone striker system at Turf Moor, has consequently not found the target since scoring at home to Derby County last August.

But the Clarets boss believes his six-foot striker can now help ease the burden on strike partner Michael Ricketts, who remains the only Clarets player to score since Garreth O'Connor found the target against the Rams on January 7.

Cotterill, whose side face Wolves at Turf Moor tonight, said: "Just because he is 6ft 2in, people think Michael is the big striker.

"I've had that once before with Tore Andre Flo at Sunderland, where he was brought in to replace Niall Quinn. But Tore was more like Gianfranco Zola because of his great feet and the fact he wasn't as good in the air as Niall.

"We just have to make sure we play Michael with the right type of player and he needs to play with someone who will take that weight off him - not because he can't win his headers or hold the ball up, but because he likes running into space and playing on defenders' shoulders.

"I don't think that side of Michael has been looked at by other people and that's why he has been playing with Gifton for the past couple of games.

"They look to get on very well and I would just like to see something fall for Gifton now so he can score a goal. I know people are echoing that, but no-one wants to see Gifton score more than him and me.

"He's has had a real topsy-turvy season, but it will be interesting to see what happens when he scores because that should lift some of the weight off his own shoulders."

Parallells can be drawn between both strikers, who have spent lengthy spells on the sidelines this season after a brief spell together at Stoke City last year.

Cotterill added: "At the moment the pair of them - partly through their own loss of form and partly when they haven't been selected - are not as fit as they could and should be.

"We can't replicate games and, at the worst possible time, we don't have a game next Saturday. But they had a short spell together at Stoke and although they didn't play together, they look as if they have hit it off quite well.

"Michael will score goals, without a shadow of a doubt. At this moment in time, he's got a good 45 minutes in him and we will be looking for him now to progress that to 60 or 70 minutes.

"But it doesn't happen overnight. You can't all of a sudden play a game or two and assume you are match fit. If you go back to pre-season, sometimes it takes lads seven or eight games and Michael has not played a lot of football in the last 12 months, so he needs those games."
