Daring thieves escaped with more than £20,000 after a smash-and-grab raid on a popular retail complex.

The offenders struck at Botany Bay Village between 7.30pm, Sunday, January 15 and 6.45am Monday 16, stealing the cash from a free-standing ATM.

A ground floor window was smashed next to a fire exit to gain access. The raiders then ducked under alarm sensors to get to the cash machine on the ground floor.

Police believe a crowbar was used to prise open the left hand side of the machine before the raiders helped themselves to a £20,600 cash haul. It is thought the raiders may have escaped on the nearby M61. It is not known how many took part in the raid.

Police have identified thefts from stand-alone cash machines as a growing trend among criminals.

Inspector Ian Roberts, of Chorley Police, said: "At one time cash machines were primarily located at banks and building societies where it was more difficult for thieves to gain access.

"Over the last couple of years we have seen cash machines installed in many shops and more remote sites and this type of crime is becoming more prevalent."
