TOWN centre chiefs today urged people in Chorley to get involved in a major consultation which could affect the future of the Flat Iron market site.

The future of Chorley's markets has been a high priority for Chorley Borough Council since it carried out an inquiry into their sustainability last year.

The investigation identified a number of recommendations to improve the markets and safeguard their future. One of the recommendations was the possible relocation of the Flat Iron stalls to Market Street and Fazakerley Street.

It was felt a move could help improve trade for market stalls as well as shops lower down Market Street.

Councillor Anthony Gee, executive member for Chorley town centre and risk management, said: "There seems to be a general consensus amongst town centre bosses, market traders and shoppers alike that something needs to be done to improve the profitability of the markets.

"And as they cont-ribute significantly to the vitality and viability of the town centre as a whole any changes need to be carefully consid-ered with consultation being a key priority.

"At the moment, the relocation is just an idea and nothing is set in stone. But what is certain is that we want to find out what the people of Chorley think about the idea and I would urge shoppers, retailers, businesses or anyone with an interest in the markets and the town centre to get in touch."

Council officers are visiting retailers on Market Street and Fazakerley Street.
