The frosty nights are going to be less of a problem for Blackpool's homeless community as the resort launched a new Night Centre initiative last week.

The three month-long project, run by Blackpool Council and the Salvation Army's Bridge Project, was launched at the town's Raikes Parade Citadel and aims to provide food, clothing and accommodation for those sleeping rough during the cold winter nights.

It follows a recent call from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister to all UK local authorities to introduce a Cold Weather Contingency Plan to ensure that single people are not forced to sleep rough during the anticipated freezing temperatures.

Local volunteers and businesses have already been instrumental in donating stock and other items to the centre.

Cllr Sue Wright, cabinet member for adults, community safety and health said, "The centre will provide a warm place to stay, food, washing, showering facilities and support to help some of our most vulnerable residents who are currently forced to sleep on the streets of the town, at the mercy of the elements."

The new centre is open from 9pm to 7am daily.
