Bosses at a doomed Blackpool factory say there is no chance of any work remaining on the Fylde.

Around 150 people will lose their jobs when Arvin Meritor eventually closes its plant at Squires Gate, with a further 95 staff expected to move to the exhaust manufacturer's Preston base.

The Michigan-based company announced in October that it was considering axing its Blackpool base.

UK Operations Manager, Bob Hutchinson, visited Blackpool on Friday for a meeting with the council's investment manager, David Metcalfe and Blackpool South MP, Gordon Marsden.

"I am obviously concerned about the impact not just of closing an important industrial site in South Shore, but also for the future of constituents employed by Arvin," said Mr Marsden after the meeting:

"I recognise the difficult capacity and order-book issues in the industry which have led management to make this assembly contraction, and that in discussion with union representatives on site, they're endeavouring to reduce company job losses and have agreed redundancy packages.

"It's disappointing though that they felt unable, for supplier reasons, to retain a Blackpool presence - and I've pressed them closely about the security of the remaining jobs, which are dependent on Toyota and Jaguar contracts. I hope these will be maintained, and I will be monitoring Arvin's progress carefully."

Senior Arvin Meritor director for Europe and Asia, Michael Wood, said: "This is an undesirable and difficult position for our business and our employees."

Blackpool Council is working to find new tenants for the company's factory on Squires Gate Lane.
