I read with great interest the article by Chris Gee and write to add my support for the restoration of the original form of Chorley's motto, Beware.
The change to Be Aware was an act of vandalism by the council.
If the name of the Chorley family was considered important enough to be given to the town, then their original motto, Beware, should also be used.
I appreciate that there will be costs involved in changing back but surely the changes can be phased in by replacing items as and when necessary.
As Councillor Bell pointed out in your article, many people didn't even know that it had been changed.
Councillor George Birtill was, as you probably know, the editor of the Chorley Guardian and a noted expert on the history of Chorley and district.
Back in 1988 he was the council's honorary historian and was vehemently opposed to the removal of the original motto Beware.
I hope that the present council members will put matters right and perhaps understand that they cannot re-write history just because people such as Councillor Wilson 'didn't like the old motto'.
