Matt Jansen last night expressed his disappointment at leaving Blackburn Rovers and admitted that without the support of the club's fans he probably would have quit the game altogether.

The 28-year-old striker formally severed his ties with the club after seven years ewhen the board agreed to terminate his contract this week.

Jansen claims he had been driven to the brink of depression by his extended exile from Mark Hughes' line-up and feared the possibility of psychological problems - which originally surfaced after his much publicised motorcycle accident nearly four years ago - could return on a permanent basis if he did not find a way of getting regular football.

As a result, the one-time England hopeful asked to be freed and he now hopes to resurrect his career elsewhere, with Bolton Wanderers, Everton, Wigan and Preston all rumoured to be interested in signing him before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

But, Jansen admits, in a perfect world, he would never have had to leave Ewood Park.

In an open letter to supporters, which he sent to the Evening Telegraph, he said: "I have been moved by many of the comments I have read about my leaving Blackburn Rovers and want to take this opportunity to say "Thank You" to the fans.

"I didn't realise that doing what I love doing best had brought so much pleasure to so many Blackburn fans and I am overwhelmed at the generosity of your comments.

"You have been fantastic fans and I am both proud and privileged to have played for you at Blackburn Rovers.

"I will never forget the support you have given me over the years, particularly since my accident.

"It is probably true to say that without that support, I might have decided to hang my boots up a long time ago.

"I accept that the main objective of the Manager is to win games and earn points and I can't and don't expect him to compromise in that objective. Mark must always field what he considers to be his best team.

"However, I have to think about my own future. I have been fit all season and consider that my form in training has been good.

"But I need and want to play first team football and wish you all to know that this is the only reason I have decided to leave.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Rovers and am disappointed that it has now ended."

Jansen made just one start for Rovers after signing a new one-year contract last summer on a pay-as-you-play basis and the frustration he felt at that lack of opportunities ultimately led to his Ewood exit.

But, despite that, he doesn't harbour a grudge with the club and he believes Rovers have a bright future under Hughes.

He added: "Rovers have a strong squad at the moment and are making a real impact under the stewardship of Mark Hughes and I very much hope that success continues.

"With your support I think Mark and the team could record the Club's most successful season of recent years.

"I would also like to thank Chairman John Williams, the Directors, Management and staff at Blackburn for their unwavering support - not forgetting my ex-team mates both past and present - but most of all, you the fans, for 7 wonderful years and offer everyone my best wishes for the future.

"Thanks for the memories."
