THERE are two types of people in this world - those who view their glass as half empty and those for whom it is always half full.

In a nutshell, some people always look on the bright side of life while others take a perpetually pessimistic view.

However, optimists are truly put to the test when things are not going well, especially at this time of year when it's so easy to become sentimental and descend into a mire of self pity.

But that's not the way for individuals like Marion Motupalli and Michael Harrison.

Marion, 44, who has ovarian cancer, was told by seven doctors that she wouldn't make it to Christmas.

But against the odds she is still with us and determined to enjoy the festive season with her three-year-old son Harry and the rest of her family.

Teenager Michael is set on making this Christmas his best ever, despite the fact that he lost his sight earlier this year.

Each of them is a testament to the sheer determination and the strength of the human spirit even in the most adverse of circumstances.

Marion and Michael should be an inspiration to all of us to count our blessings and make this festive season a happy one for everyone around us.
