REGARDING the inquest report in the LET, November 30 regarding two young men who were killed when the Mercedes CLK 500 they were driving in Preston New Road, Samlesbury.

The inquest heard the speed of the vehicle and two bald rear tyres were were obvious contributory factors to the collision. The anti-lock braking system was not working but that defect was only an opinion as further detailed investigation was not carried out.

The Department of Transport states a young driver can pass a driving test and then drive on a motorway at 70mph. Surely this department should legislate with the government to stop this anomaly.

Young people are blamed for driving without consideration to other road users, but not only young people are guilty of this, I have seen people of various ages committing the most unusual manoeuvres.

I recently saw a driver negotiating a right-hand bend at a very busy Blackburn junction while he was holding a mobile phone to his left ear with his right hand and steering his vehicle with his left hand.

It was the most stupid piece of driving I have witnessed for some time and this was a mature male, so there are careless drivers of any age who obviously do not set examples for younger drivers.
