A SAFETY campaign has been launched in Rossendale to help save lives this Christmas.

Rossendale Council has produced advice leaflets with safety tips and advice on on how to put up decorations..

Traditionally at this time of year the risk of accidents and fires increases with around 200 people going to hospital after accidents with Christmas tree lights.

The council environmental health team says risks can be minimised by taking time for a few safety checks.

Liz Lawryshyn, environmental health promotions officer, said: "We are trying to be proactive to prevent any accidents in Rossendale -- we don't want to spoil the party, but we do need to get the safety message across."

The biggest danger is fires caused by candles and outside illuminated decorations.

Christmas lights should only be bought from reputable traders. Wires must be checked for damage after storage and only those with a low voltage transformer used wherever possible. Care should be taken not to overload sockets, especially with the multi sets of outside lights.

Always check lights used outside are for exterior use.The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) warned that people should check lights each year or buy new ones, as faulty ones could cause accidents.

David Jenkins of RoSPA said: "With more care most accidents would not happen and Christmas celebrations needn't be spoiled by a trip to hospital."

He added: "People keep tree lights for far too long. With old lights, cables, bulbs and plugs can be damaged.

"New ones, bought from a reputable establishment, are made to higher safety standards."
