Disco fever took over the city's community radio station to pay tribute to the legendary Top Rank nightclub.

Almost everyone who lived in the city during the 1960s and 70s will remember the Top Rank discotheque.

It opened in 1963 in the Odeon cinema building, which today houses Tokyo Jo's.

The club's former chief of staff, Pete Simons invited one of the Rank's early DJs, Sugar Ray Lennon and David 'Taff' Evans a former supervisor at the club onto his show on Preston FM to reminisce about the venue.

They recalled how the club became famous with the Rolling Stones and Motown singer Marvin Gaye playing at the venue and how it regularly hosted the BBC Radio DJs, Terry Wogan and Noel Edmonds.

Pete, who is now retired and is a volunteer presenter on Preston FM, said: "It was said that it was open eight nights a week.

He used to DJ during the Saturday morning event for children and the Tuesday evening session for teenagers.

He added: "It was a fantastic atmosphere in there, the Top Rank really meant something to people in Preston."

He added that there was a strict dress code for men, of a shirt and tie, which meant one punter was once forced to buy the hot dog seller's tie, whose stand was outside Miller Arcade opposite the club in order to gain entry!

Next Monday Pete will be talking about Northern Soul.

Taff runs a reunion for Top Rank staff which previous customers are also welcome to attend. For dates, call him on 01772 741685 or 07890 585688.
