Trouble sparked by drunken yobs has provoked a call for a complete ban on alcohol in and around a village shopping centre.

Councillor Mark Perks has asked Chorley Borough Council to impose an order restricting the consumption of alcohol in parts of Astley Village.

The request comes after residents living above the shopping parade were affected by drunken yobs for two weekends running.

The most recent incident saw residents woken in the early hours of Sunday October 9 as youths who have been using the second floor courtyard as a drinks den, ripped out security lighting and CCTV cameras and tried to smash into one of the flats.

Under the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001, the council could make the order for a specific area.

However, the police would remain responsible for the enforcement of the designation order.

Chorley Council is under obligation to consult with the police for whom the burden of enforcement would fall.

Councillor Perks added: "There has been an issue with young people drinking during the evening in the village centre.

"Various initiatives have been tried, but even when the police visit disturbances, they are only able to confiscate alcohol from those youths under 18 years old.

"This has meant a great number have been left to continue drinking into the early hours, creating many anti-social behaviour issues but also violence and intimidation to local residents."
